Leading the Way in Environmental Stewardship

April 20, 2023

Banff, 20 April 2023 – Fairmont’s collection of luxury resorts in Canada’s western mountain region recognize the importance of Earth Day and being strong leaders of environmental practice within the distinctive locations they reside. These acclaimed properties in Jasper, Lake Louise, Banff and Whistler continue to raise the stewardship bar within the Fairmont brand and their respective communities – and with a new regional director of sustainability onboard, the resorts look forward to continuing to build upon a strong sustainability strategy that presently includes some of the following key initiatives:

Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge: FireSmart Certification
Located in the world’s largest accessible Dark Sky Preserve, Jasper National Park, this resort became the first-ever staff community to receive certification from FireSmart Canada in 2022. The resort and its ownership group identified and invested significant capital resources to remove major fire hazards, as well as conducting annual property and shoreline clean ups to help the property safe for wildlife and guests. The Lodge also actively participates in the FireSmart Safe Neighbourhood Program to help further the commitment of keeping its communities safe from wildfires. Click here for more details.

Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise: Renewable Energy Certificate
The resort has held a Renewable Energy Certificate since 2003 which supplies 50% (5,500,000 kW) of the power at Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise from renewable energy sources. As the property continues to reduce energy consumption, the percentage of energy covered by the certificate increases. Renewable energy represents 63% of the hotel’s supply (source: NNNEI Report, 2021). Click here for more details.

Fairmont Banff Springs: Sourcing Locally
The sustainability theme runs deep in Fairmont Banff Springs’ culinary tradition. Executive Chef Atticus Garant and his team work diligently with local purveyors to bring in the highest quality ingredients, and source more than 75% of the resort’s products from Alberta and other Canadian provinces. Pastries, cured meats and preserves are made onsite, with an in-house butcher shop providing fine cut, locally-sourced meat for the entire resort. To further reduce its carbon footprint, microgreens are grown in urban cultivators at STOCK Food & Drink. Herbs, greens and small vegetables are also grown in an onsite greenhouse. The castle is committed to purchasing local, organic, Fair Trade and sustainable food products wherever possible. Click here for more details.

Fairmont Chateau Whistler: Supporting Soap for Hope Canada
Leftover soap, shampoo, conditioner, slippers, and pre-loved duvets and pillows that would otherwise be discarded from guest rooms are donated to the Soap for Hope Canada, which processes and distributes amenities to community facilities serving vulnerable individuals throughout Canada. Fairmont’s Regional Director of Sustainability for Canada’s Western Mountain Region, Patrick Jones, is proud of the longstanding history these four resorts have in the environmental stewardship landscape. “Many may not know that Fairmont Hotels & Resorts was the world’s first luxury hotel brand to have a comprehensive environmental program, which launched over 30 years ago.” He adds, “By serving as proud stewards of the surrounding environment and incorporating sustainability into everything we do, we can ensure our valued guests will be able to enjoy their stay at these resorts for generations to come.”
